I give this: Judith Ivory's "The Proposition"the exact, same, verbatim review I gave for her work: "Untie My Heart"-
as my feeling and impressions are the same:

****HOT-HOT-HOT****
Not only that- BUT- this hits on all cylinders!!!
Judith Ivory is an actual STORY TELLER!!!
I cannot express how shocked and thrilled I was, stumbling over this.
She is amazingly fluent and lush with words, phrasing and emotions.
Confidant. Daring. Rash.
Using improbable combinations of descriptive language
for known human emotions, hopes, dreams and failings...
She throws things together in much the same way as an adventurous Iron Chef might...
in the oddest combinations- and yet
brilliantly done!
I went back and read, and re-read entire portions of this book,
just so I could savor again.
I wanted seconds! And thirds!
And started consuming anything else she has written.
Over joyed with a rush of elation.
It has been a very long time since I found an author of this caliber.
Yes, there are others.
But they are far and few in between.
A definite keeper!

The Proposition Judith Ivory 9780380802609 Books Reviews
Mick, a London rat-catcher, falls into the hands of an improving elocution and etiquette teacher who has been engaged to eliminate his lower class accent for mysterious reasons involving a wager between twin brothers. Edwina, a well-born woman on her own, must make her way teaching country gentry and ambitious members of the mercantile class to talk nob properly and Mick is a challenge she cannot resist as a dedicated philologist; while Mick is bribed to agree with a payout too good to pass up if he succeeds in passing as a lord at a duke's annual ball.
My details will necessarily be sketchy rather than ruin delightful surprises throughout but I want to pass on the overall afterglow of a sweet (not treacly sweet) Pygmalion plot with the hunky rat-catcher and the prudish, spinster teacher trying to hoist him out of the gutter and into the heart of high society. I loved reading this story, and most recently hearing the audiobook.
There is a wonderful battle of wills bet. the insecure, uptight teacher and the handsome mustachioed ladykiller Mick, who finds his teacher in turns entrancingly different and endearing. There are hilarious negotiations for baby steps in his clean up that push the teacher beyond the edge of propriety, and along the way he teaches her a thing or two about passion and testing boundaries. I loved how each influences the other and provides a certain necessary something that gives the other a stronger sense of self-worth even as he/she is falling in love.
The author's research was extensive about dialects and etiquette of the time, her dialogue crisp and very funny, the chemistry cooked with all available BTUs. It hit all my buttons just right and I loved this cover to cover. What was most romantic to me, they both come to love what was essential in the other person, their character, their warmth, their abilities, even though they failed to see what made themselves worthy of the other's regard, that is, until they understood each other and trusted that despite the yawning, discouraging gulf between them, they were meant to be together however they could contrive it. This is among my favorite romantic stories and it is truly, deeply romantic. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
BTW, the audiobook was delightful, the reader performed Mick's sly evolution from gutter-speak seduction to gentleman-who-knows-his-own-mind brilliantly. Loved it but you have to love an intelligent reading, not just a rush of words to finish paragraphs, to appreciate this audiobook.
In fact, I pretty much wrote in long sections at a time, cackling and giggling as the story unfolded itself to me--I was as surprised as readers as scene after scene came into my head while I simultaneously typed the pages. while my subscipus. No book ever came so directly out onto the page with so little trouble. If more had, I would definitely have written more books, since it is the easiest was to write. But it is rare way for a book to develop, at least for me. Nonetheless, it was enormous fun!
Pygmalion story reversed. The Heroine, Edwina Henrietta Bollash, or Winnie as she was affectionately called by Mick, is a philologist; someone who studies people’s speech. Mick Tremore, a ratcatcher from Cromwell, was being chased by s mob from the dressmakers shop next door. Mick was accused of taking liberties with Nell, the seamstress’s assistant. Nell was crying and trying to reason with the mob of relatives, that nothing happened. Two gentlemen, Emile and Jeremy Lamont, were visiting the tea shop, and were highly entertained making bets with each other, on which side would prevail. The mob, ignoring Nell, continued to inflict harm on Mick until the constable arrived threatening to jail the whole lot of them. The Lamont's, calmed everyone down by paying off the shopkeeper and Nells father. When they learned Edwina was the famous philologist, one of the Jeremy bet, with Edwina's help and Mick's cooperation, they could fool the ton by passing off Mick as a gentleman at a ball in 6 weeks time.
