I enjoyed this book a lot more than I expected to. Not that I expected to hate it or anything--perhaps I've just had poor luck with samples lately. Also I'm very picky. But this book struck a chord with me and kept me reading until the end, and I came away from it feeling satisfied. The main character has a sweet but strong voice that comes through well, although I felt that at times her swearing seemed a little out of character (I mean, far be from me to tell a writer how his characters should think, but for me it seemed out of place and jarring). There's a strong sense of both place and time, and the author does a good job of balancing the main character's love for her native Taiwan with her desire to be free of it.So, yes. The pacing is swift, the characters are engaging, the setting is well-defined and feels true, it's nicely written and generally a pleasure to read. All in all great literary YA, and I look forward to more from this author.

My Last Summer edition by Kerem Mermutlu Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A wonderful book. It is much more a conversation with a friend you haven't seen in a while than a story. Really interesting and an easy read.
I must say I love the way the story is told, the details, the descriptions, the going back and forth to the story and whatever is attached to it... And I love the protagonist! She's just as sweet, and dreamy, and hopeful as any other girl, and she still manages to be adorable.
The story made my heart happy ) I may read it over and over again.
My Last Summmer is an interesting, well-written debut novel. The author knows about many aspects of Taiwanese culture and uses this knowledge to make the story more authentic. While this story is about a woman's experience in Taiwan, the story is very universal. People in all countries have hopes and dreams and this book is about one person with high hopes for herself and her life. I would recommend this book to anyone.
A funny, heartfelt, and quirky novel that reminds me of a good 1990's era indie film in tone, story, and point of view of its Taiwanese girl hero. A great read if you like something more character and setting driven, rather than plot driven.
I sampled the author's writing via his collection of tiny (shorter than short) stories. Before I'd even finished, I had to buy his novel.
I loved the voice of the main character and the diary-style format of the book! It's literary, yet accessible and interesting. The author will express intense emotions in a simple way, which makes the writing powerful.
